Introduction

Welcome to the S1 Beta page. This site is dedicated to research and the archival of not only this prototype, but many other unknown prototypes of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Originally thought to be a hoax, screenshots were sent to ZDR and posted on firefawx's IRC chat. Then, the "hoaxer" sent out a ROM. It was deemed real later. Many differences are in this one proto alone. Higher quality drums, a different SEGA card, zone differences,unfinished levels and more! Discussion about the other "lost" protos are also here, so if you like the Tokyo Toy Show Sonic, go ahead.

What is the Sonic 1 Beta?

The Sonic 1 Beta is an unfinished prototype of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. It was sent out to a UK Magazine in March of 1991. ZDR got in contact with the one who gave us the ROM, he said he didn't expect us to think its actually real, but he comfirmed it is the real deal. He said that he was a former employee at a British Magazine around 1991 and previewed Sonic 1, and he kept the cartridge after leaving the magazine, only to dump it years later and share screenshots of it, and then gave us the ROM.
